Open Research Mid-Point

Hello POSE participants,

This summer is quickly flying by! We are just over half-way through the Open Research unit.

Looking Back

On June 1st we opened the Open Research unit. This unit focuses on open workflows, open software and open data. Many of you have been completing the activities for the unit and sharing great feedback and thoughts in the Discussion board. If you haven’t had a chance to take a look at the discussion yet, here are some highlights:

Several participants have reflected on their experiences both in the scholarly field of education and as educator-practitioners in other domains. These include questioning how the education field could standardize methods for reporting experimental procedures to assist in replication, wondering about the ethics of open data with respect to sensitive human-subject research data, and how transparent research protocols may boost the credibility of qualitative research methods.

If you haven’t yet jumped into the discussion, please do, we’d love to hear your thoughts on the topic of open research.

June Sessions

Tomorrow, on June 14th at 11am, please join us for an Introduction to OSF session with Mathew Vis-Dunbar, Data & Digital Scholarship Librarian at UBCO Library. The session will explore OSF, a research project management tool that encourages best practices in project organization and reproducibility. In this introductory workshop you will explore some existing projects, set up an OSF account and learn the basics of OSF to manage a research project from start to finish.

Coming next week, June 21st, Dr. Ben Motz, an Assistant Professor at Indiana University’s Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, will be hosting a discussion on reproducibility in education research, the Many Classes project, pre-registration and open research in general. Please register for the session if you haven’t yet.

Looking Ahead

In the final two weeks of the Open Research unit, be sure to take some time to work through the unit activities and start contributing to the unit discussion. In order to receive the certificate of completion you need to complete each of the unit learning activities and confirm this by completing the end of unit quizzes.

We are excited to learn with you for the remainder of the Open Research unit. The POSE program is flying by and the final course topic Open Education is just around the corner.

Sincerely,

The POSE Facilitation Team
