Greetings POSE participants!
We hope that you have been enjoying the warm spring weather.
For the last two weeks we have been learning together about open access in open scholarship. It has been inspiring to see the different ways that you are thinking about open access in your disciplinary context.
We encourage you to continue to contribute to the open access discussion and complete the open access activities. If you haven’t had a chance to read through the discussions or activities, they are full of incredible nuggets of wisdom and ideas from a variety of institutional perspectives. The activities included:
- For one of the Open Access activities, members of the cohort shared thoughts, experiences, and warnings on predatory publishing and false advertising in scholarship.
- For another Open Access activity there are some real eye opening amounts being reported by members of the cohort for how much it would cost to purchase access to all articles referenced in single paper that they had recently read.
- Additionally, a few recent events, including the leak of an EU Council of Ministers position paper on support for immediate open access, prompted some updates to the Open Access Mandates page of the Open Pathways unit. Learners who read through that content prior to May 10th may want to go back and take a look at the changes.
Upcoming Sessions
We are also excited for the Open Access workshops and chats that are happening this month:
- Creative Commons and Copyleft Trolls – May 16, 1pm to 2pm
Join us for a workshop session will provide participants with a more in-depth understanding of Creative Commons licenses and some of the potential pitfalls when using and assigning licenses to your work. More info and registration. - A Global and Diverse World of Scholarly Communication is Well Under Way – May 23, 11am to 12pm
For over 25 years, the Public Knowledge Project (PKP), has been supporting open access scholarly publishing around the world. At last count, PKP’s open source software was being used to publish over 30,000 journals, half of which publish in languages other than English, and most of which are in the global south. Join us for a discussion with Juan Pablo Alperin, the PKP Associate Director of Research and Associate Professor in the SFU Publishing Program who will share PKP experiences while examining global trends in open access. More info and registration.
Please spend a moment and make sure that you have registered for these sessions..
Looking Ahead
We have two more weeks to go in the Open Access unit. If you haven’t already done so, may want to start contributing to the unit discussion in the next little while. We look forward to continuing to explore open scholarship with you!
Sincerely,
The POSE Facilitation Team
